Nonsurgical Management of Periodontal Diseases Based on the Principles of Cause Related Therapy

The non-surgical management of periodontal disease will be discussed based on the principles of cause-related therapy. Along with the etiologic factor, the major and minor contorting factors of periodontal diseases will be reviewed. The new periodontal disease diagnosis & classification system will be reviewed with an emphasis on its practical utilization in everyday clinical practice. The talk will be finished by reviewing a series of patient cases, in which their periodontal diseases were successfully managed non-surgically.

Course Objectives
1. Understand the prevalence, epidemiology and natural history of periodontal diseases.
2. Identify the etiologic and potential contributing factors of periodontal diseases.
3. Apprehend the principles of cause-related therapy and apply them in managing patients with periodontal
disease in non-surgically.
4. Recognize the limitation of non-surgical therapy.
5. Utilize the simplified decision tree to manage their periodontal patients in daily practice
Our speaker, Dr. Tae Kwon, received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto. He further pursued and received his specialty training in Periodontology as well as Master of Medical Sciences from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he was the recipient of the Hanley D. Epstein Award for clinical and academic excellence. Dr. Kwon has served as an ad-hoc reviewer of Quintessence International, British Dental Journal and Oral Health and Dental Management, Journal of Applied Oral Science, International Dental Journal, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Translational Medicine, and Dental Traumatology. He is also an editorial board member of the Quintessence International, International Dental Journal, and Dental Traumatology. Furthermore, he is the author of many articles in peer-reviewed dental journals. Dr. Kwon lectured at several academic institutions including Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Tufts School of Dental Medicine, and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He is the director of a local Seattle Study Club chapter, “NH Study Club for Excellence in Dentistry” and “Monadnock Dental Hygiene Study Club”. He maintains his private practice, Monadnock Perio & Implant Center, in Keene, New Hampshire.
